A Chippokes river day needs one extra check next week
The Surry County park offers waterfront walks, but construction changes access October 5–8.
Chippokes State Park makes a James River outing possible without booking a boat: its waterfront paths and farm landscape offer several ways to spend time outside in Surry County.
For a visit next week, check the construction notice first. The visitor center, park office and day-use area will close October 5–8. The park says beaches remain reachable through College Run or Powhatan trails, and staff can still be contacted by phone and email.
Plan around the access you need
The park lists 12 miles of trails, with many routes crossing farm fields that can become muddy. Grounds normally open dawn to dusk. There is no designated swimming area, no boat rental service and no motorized boat launch.
Those distinctions make this a walking-and-waterfront stop rather than an assumed full-service boating destination. Confirm your intended route, parking and facilities before departure.
Find the park at 695 Chippokes Park Road, Surry; call 757-294-3728 or check the official park page. Details checked October 2. Explore more Travel & Lifestyle.
