An hour on foot opens up Kiptopeke’s coastal history
October ranger walks offer an easy starting point for an Eastern Shore outing, with a stair-free route available on request.
An Eastern Shore afternoon can begin with a short walk and a question: why are concrete ships sitting off Kiptopeke? A ranger-led program at Kiptopeke State Park explores that history alongside the landscape and birdlife.
The Life & Times of Kiptopeke Hike is scheduled October 9 and 10 from 3 to 4 p.m., meeting at Picnic Shelter 1. The route covers about a mile.
Plan the walk around your group
The park rates the hike easy, but the usual route includes stairs. Tell the ranger before departure if you need or prefer the alternative that bypasses them. Wear closed-toe shoes; children need an accompanying adult, and leashed dogs are welcome.
No registration or additional program charge is required, although the standard parking or admission fee applies. The park is at 3540 Kiptopeke Drive, Cape Charles; call 757-331-2267 with access questions.
Check the official October 9 listing before departure. Details checked October 3; later dates can change. Find more waterfront outings in Travel & Lifestyle.
