Avio breaks ground in Hurt on a $500 million rocket-motor plant

The Pittsylvania County project brings a planned 1,500-plus jobs and a major aerospace investment to Southside.

By The Virginian News · Published October 2, 2026

A major aerospace manufacturing project has moved from announcement to groundbreaking in Hurt. Avio USA and state officials marked the start of its new Pittsylvania County facility September 29.

The governor’s office describes a $500 million investment projected to create more than 1,500 jobs. The planned plant will occupy approximately 900,000 square feet at Southern Virginia Multimodal Park and produce solid rocket motors for defense and commercial-space applications.

What it means for Southside

Avio USA is a subsidiary of Italy’s Avio S.p.A. The project adds a new manufacturing opportunity in a community beyond Virginia’s largest metropolitan markets, with support from the Virginia Talent Accelerator workforce-training program.

The employment figure is a projection. Groundbreaking does not mean those jobs have already been filled or that the facility is producing motors. Residents considering future opportunities should distinguish the announced workforce commitment from individual job openings.
