Cheriton’s new trail segment extends an Eastern Shore route to 3.6 miles
The September 21 opening adds paved walking and cycling space, with a new trailhead near Country Place.
A longer walk or bicycle ride is now possible on the southern Eastern Shore’s developing rail trail. VDOT opened the Cheriton segment on September 21, adding 1.4 miles of paved shared-use path between Route 13 and Sunnyside Road.
Combined with the Cape Charles segment, which opened August 20, the route now offers 3.6 continuous miles of shared-use path. The Cheriton work includes a new parking area just north of Country Place.
Know where the path changes
The project also added a half-mile of striped bicycle lanes along Sunnyside Road toward South Bayside Road. Those on-road lanes are distinct from the paved shared-use path—an important detail when planning a family outing.
The first two segments were built under a $3.9 million contract. They are completed pieces of a broader 49.1-mile vision connecting Cape Charles and Hallwood; that entire route is not yet open.
