Four Virginia dark-sky parks to put on your autumn shortlist

A rewarding Virginia evening outing can begin with a darker sky. Four state parks hold International Dark Sky Park designations: Staunton River, James River, Natural Bridge and Sky Meadows, according to Virginia State Parks.

Use geography to narrow the choice. Staunton River is the Southern Virginia option near Scottsburg. James River offers a central Virginia starting point near Gladstone. Natural Bridge puts a night-sky outing in the Rockbridge area, while Sky Meadows is at Delaplane.

Choose the evening as carefully as the park

Start with the state’s dark-sky directory and program calendar. Before traveling, confirm the observation location, after-hours access, admission charges and whether a scheduled program requires registration. A dark-sky designation does not mean every park entrance or trail stays open overnight.

Check the forecast and plan your return journey before settling in. Clouds can change the experience, and a posted program may have its own weather arrangements.
