Harrisonburg I-81 meeting gives residents a look at the widening work ahead

An October 15 open house will cover construction on the corridor and the Pleasant Valley Road bridge.

Residents who want to understand how the Interstate 81 widening will affect their trips can meet the project team in Harrisonburg on October 15.

VDOT will hold an open house from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Pleasant Valley Elementary School, 215 Pleasant Valley Road. Visitors can arrive at any point during that window to examine maps and ask about current and upcoming construction.

What is being built

The project adds a third lane in each direction between mile markers 242.0 and 248.8. It also replaces the Pleasant Valley Road bridge and adds a single-lane roundabout at Pleasant Valley Road, Early Road and Abbott Lane.

Construction began this spring and is scheduled to finish in summer 2032 under a $219 million contract. The long timetable makes the meeting useful for households and businesses planning around changing routes.
