High Bridge is an autumn escape—plan around the downtown trail closure
Start with the park’s current access alert before setting out from Farmville.
High Bridge can be the centerpiece of a relaxed autumn outing, but the approach matters this season. Virginia State Parks says bridge reconstruction will close the trail east from Farmville's Main Street to Osborne Road through October.
That alert overrides the park page's older suggestion to begin a ride downtown. The October 3 half marathon and 5K has also moved to High Bridge Station, at 1466 Camp Paradise Road in Rice.
A shorter approach to the view
For a simple visit, the park lists High Bridge Station's lot as 0.3 miles from the bridge. The lot opens at 8 a.m.; the visitor center and gift shop list daily hours of 9 a.m.–4 p.m. The park closes at dusk.
The 32.2-mile main trail follows a former railroad bed with a generally level crushed-limestone surface. Its landmark bridge extends more than 2,400 feet across the Appomattox River valley. Water fountains are available only at High Bridge Station, so bring water for the rest of the outing.
