HRBT westbound closes Friday night: plan a different crossing this weekend
Repaving will shut the Hampton-bound tunnels from October 2 at 9 p.m. until October 5 at 5 a.m.
Weekend plans across Hampton Roads need an extra travel check: the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel is scheduled to close completely westbound toward Hampton beginning Friday night. Eastbound traffic toward Norfolk will remain open.
VDOT’s September 30 advisory confirms the closure from 9 p.m. October 2 through 5 a.m. October 5. Crews will repave the existing tunnels; this work is separate from the expansion project.
Which crossing to use
The signed primary detour uses the I-664 Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel. The James River Bridge on Route 17 and the free Jamestown-Scotland Ferry may suit other destinations. VDOT advises allowing extra time and limiting nonessential trips.
A second westbound closure, October 9–12, will happen only if needed. Weather can change the schedule.
