I-85 bridge traffic shift near Lake Gaston could last into late 2028
VDOT plans to move southbound traffic across the median at the Roanoke River as early as October 2.
A drive south on Interstate 85 near Lake Gaston will soon look different—and the change is scheduled to remain for more than two years.
VDOT says a lane closure and crossover at the Roanoke River in Mecklenburg County could begin October 2 and continue through late fall 2028, weather permitting.
How traffic will move
The southbound right lane will close at Exit 4, serving Bracey, Lake Gaston and Route 903. Drivers will merge left, cross the median and use the inside northbound lane over the river before returning to the southbound roadway. Northbound traffic will use its outside lane.
The Route 903 entrance ramp to I-85 south is also scheduled to close temporarily October 2 while crews establish the new pattern. VDOT specifies a reduced 60-mph work-zone speed limit.
