Norfolk fabrication expansion puts apprenticeships at the center of hiring

A Norfolk manufacturer's expansion offers a concrete opening for people looking to enter the skilled trades. Wilson Pipe & Fabrication plans to invest $3.5 million and create 15 jobs, with eight designated as trainee and apprenticeship positions, according to Virginia's September 22 announcement.

The company expects to more than quadruple its facility space. Its work includes pipefitting, welding and fabrication for ship repair, shipbuilding and energy infrastructure.

A route into the workforce

Founder Brandon Wilson, a Hampton Roads native, established the company in 2016 after completing a Newport News Shipyard apprenticeship. The state says the new trainee roles will include on-the-job training after hiring.

Virginia's Jobs Investment Program will assist with recruitment and training. The investment and positions are announced plans; the release does not establish that hiring is complete.
