Three Virginia rail-trail outings for three different kinds of day

Choose a paved town-to-town route, a river corridor or a Southern Virginia trailhead.

By The Virginian News · Published September 30, 2026

The best trail for a fall outing is the one that suits the time, surface and distance you actually want. These three Virginia rail-trail options offer different starting points for a walk or bicycle ride.

For a paved route: the W&OD

NOVA Parks' Washington & Old Dominion trail runs 45 miles between Shirlington and Purcellville, with multiple access points. You can choose a short out-and-back instead of a full-length ride. Published hours are 5 a.m.–9 p.m. daily. Use the official parking and trail guide to choose an entry point and check current notices.

For a river setting: New River Trail

This Southwest Virginia linear park follows a former railroad corridor and offers access from several communities. Crucially, its current advisory tells visitors to use only open portions shown on the trail map. Do not treat the park's full 57-mile length as a promise of an uninterrupted route.

The park page lists dawn-to-dusk access and a $7 standard-vehicle parking fee. Check the map and confirm the segment before departure; the office number is 276-699-6778.

For Southern Virginia towns: Tobacco Heritage Trail

The trail's access-point directory is useful because it distinguishes parking, restrooms and simple path access. Centennial Park in La Crosse lists parking but no restroom; Evans Creek Road in Brodnax lists both. Pick the facilities your group needs rather than assuming every entrance has them.

This shortlist is organized around practical trip choices. Details were checked September 30, 2026. Browse Travel & Lifestyle for more ways to explore the state.
