Virginia by Water: plan an October day at Claytor Lake

Boating, easy trails and lake views make a flexible outing—but rental hours change with the season.

By The Virginian News · Published October 1, 2026

An October visit to Claytor Lake State Park can revolve around a boat ride, a woodland walk or time beside the water. The useful first decision is whether your day depends on renting equipment.

The park’s current notice says privately operated boat rentals are available on weekends or by appointment through October. Confirm the specific boat and time before traveling. The marina’s gas dock also has weekend hours, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., through October.

Build a flexible day

For a land-based option, the park lists seven miles of easy-rated hiking or biking trails and a universally accessible fishing pier. A picnic and short walk make a sensible alternative if boating arrangements fall through.

The park opens daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.; parking fees apply. Find it at 6620 Ben H. Bolen Drive, Dublin. Call 540-643-2500 or consult the official park page for current notices and operator links.
