Virginia’s statewide apple crunch returns October 8

Farm to School Month connects a simple autumn snack with the people who grow Virginia food.

By The Virginian News · Published October 3, 2026

Virginia-grown apples will have a statewide moment Thursday, October 8, when schools and communities take part in the tenth annual Crunch Heard ’Round the Commonwealth.

The activity falls during Virginia Farm to School Week and National Farm to School Month. The idea is straightforward: take a bite of a Virginia-grown apple and use the occasion to connect students with local agriculture.

A local connection at lunchtime

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and the Virginia Department of Education provide registration information and a 2026 toolkit through the Farm to School program. Teachers and school nutrition teams can use those resources to plan participation.

Families interested in joining a school activity should check with their own school before sending food. For a community celebration, the useful starting point is finding Virginia-grown apples and deciding how to explain where they came from.

The earlier deadline for free promotional materials has passed. Current registration and planning links remain on the program page. More statewide developments: Virginia Today.
