Steven Amburgey's path back to dentistry brought him home to an Abingdon practice
Steven Amburgey once set aside the idea of becoming a dentist to study geology. A conversation with his wife brought the earlier ambition back into focus—and eventually led to a dental career built around Southwest Virginia.
Steven Amburgey once set aside the idea of becoming a dentist to study geology. A conversation with his wife brought the earlier ambition back into focus—and eventually led to a dental career built around Southwest Virginia.
After graduating from West Virginia University's dental school in 2005, Amburgey moved to Abingdon and worked as an associate. He later opened a practice in Chilhowie before returning to Abingdon for a larger office with room to see more patients. His practice on Lee Highway carries that story forward, combining a broad range of dental services with a team that helps patients through the details of a visit.
Amburgey Dental provides preventive checkups and cleanings, fillings, dentures and dental implants, along with cosmetic and orthodontic options. Those services allow conversations to begin with a patient's immediate concern—a routine examination, a damaged tooth or a missing tooth—and consider what care may be appropriate next.
The people around the dentist are an important part of that experience. Whitney brings previous dental-assisting experience to the front office. Dental hygienist Kimberly trained at Wytheville Community College. Treatment coordinator and assistant Tracy has participated in dental mission work locally and in Ecuador through Global Health Outreach. Each role touches a different part of the relationship between a patient and the practice, from scheduling to treatment and follow-through.
Amburgey continues to pursue professional education, while his practice emphasizes explaining options and getting to know the person in the treatment chair. That approach gives the clinical work a personal setting without reducing it to a promise of the same treatment for everyone.
The office serves patients of different ages and offers appointments Monday through Thursday. Its location on Lee Highway places it within the community Amburgey first joined after dental school and later chose to return to as an independent practitioner.
The path was not entirely straight, but its destination has been consistent: a place to practice dentistry, build a team and serve the area over time. Patients can contact the office to discuss an appointment and the services relevant to their needs.
