J. W. Shelton Auction & Realty brings Southside land knowledge to sales and auctions
Sam Watts’ long connection to the South Boston firm continues a business founded in 1955.
Sam Watts spent about a decade working with Jimmy Shelton before buying the business from him in 1991. That apprenticeship-to-ownership path is central to J. W. Shelton Auction & Realty, a South Boston firm whose history reaches back to 1955.
The company combines real-estate brokerage with auction work. Homes and land are part of the brokerage business, while estate sales, farm equipment and real estate itself can become auction assignments. The firm has also conducted auctions for banks, attorneys and corporations.
Its Riverdale location on Bill Tuck Highway places it in Southside Virginia, where property knowledge can involve more than a house’s rooms. Farmland, timber, equipment and family estates all appear within the company’s field of work.
Watts serves as owner, broker and auctioneer. His team brings other kinds of relevant experience. James “Jay” Jennings earned a property-management degree at Virginia Tech in 2003 and has worked in residential and commercial construction and maintenance. Dana Howerton Smith’s Halifax County background includes family connections to timber, farming, cattle and land subdivision.
Those experiences matter to the scope of the business. A residential sale, a farm property and an estate auction require different conversations, even when they involve people from the same community. Construction knowledge can inform an understanding of a building, while rural land experience provides context for a different kind of asset.
The firm’s own auction photograph shows the work in action: an auctioneer with a microphone addressing a gathering outdoors. It is a fitting counterpart to the office-based side of real-estate brokerage.
J. W. Shelton Auction & Realty continues to serve buyers, sellers and auction clients from its South Boston base. Inquiries can be directed to the office to discuss the appropriate route for a property or sale.
