Barry Dye built a second path back to construction in Southwest Virginia

Barry Dye’s route to his own construction business included a detour through manufacturing. When building work slowed in 2008, he took a tradesman’s job at Universal Fibers—but continued building and remodeling on his days off.

Construction was already familiar territory. The Bristol native learned as a teenager in his family’s business, developing an interest in working with his hands before leaving high school. His family’s experience in the field stretched across more than three decades.

The work he took on alongside his regular job became Barry Dye Construction. As demand grew, he eventually stepped away from the manufacturing position to concentrate on the business full time, according to his account of its development.

Today, the company’s Southwest Virginia services include decks, flooring, additions, siding and remodeling. Kitchens, bathrooms and basements are among the spaces it works on, alongside smaller handyman projects.

That range reflects a career built around the practical tasks of improving a home. The company’s Bristol base keeps the work connected to the region where Dye learned the trade. Homeowners can contact him to discuss an existing space or a project they want to add.
