A submariner’s path to financial planning in Virginia Beach

Before Joe Sallee worked with families on retirement, his assignments took him aboard Navy submarines and onto staffs in the United States and overseas. His first financial advisory business had a clientele with a familiar connection: military families and government employees.

Sallee founded and led that business, Patriot Strategic Investments, before joining Bay Capital Advisors. He now works in Virginia Beach as a managing member of the independent, fee-only firm. Bay Capital offers one-time financial plans as well as ongoing investment management, giving a household with a discrete planning question a different way to engage the firm from one looking for a continuing relationship.

Sallee’s education crossed disciplines well before his move into civilian financial work. He studied physics at the University of Oklahoma, then earned graduate degrees in management at North Carolina State University and national security strategy at the National War College.

In Hampton Roads, some of his financial work has taken place outside an advisory office. Sallee served on the community investment committee for the United Way of South Hampton Roads and chaired its financial review panel. In Virginia Beach, he also volunteered with Court Appointed Special Advocates and served on its board.
