At a Luray veterinary clinic, a custom ramp leads to Scampi’s desk
Two resident cats have become familiar figures at the privately owned Page County practice that began in 1991.
One piece of equipment at Blue Mountain Animal Clinic has an unusually specific name: the “Scamp ramp.” It gives Scampi, a resident cat, access to a desk at the Luray practice. Another of her favored spots is the bay window, where she can watch birds.
Scampi arrived as a kitten in 2019 after an injury left her unable to use her back legs. The clinic recounts weeks of physical therapy before she regained much of her mobility. The ramp stayed. Years later, another injured kitten came into the practice. The staff calls him both Okra and Nubbins and describes his appetite as one of the more predictable features of a day at the clinic.
The two cats are recent arrivals in the longer history of the practice on Collins Avenue. Blue Mountain began as a small family operation in 1991 and remains privately owned. Its patients come from Luray, Stanley, Shenandoah and neighboring communities in Page County.
Veterinarians Johnny F. Clark, K. Michael Kline and Kristina Ruffner Pauley are among the people behind the practice. Alongside the stories of its resident cats, the clinic’s daily work includes wellness visits, dental care, diagnostics and surgery for pets whose owners bring them in by appointment.
Blue Mountain Animal Clinic is at 307 Collins Avenue in Luray. The office schedules visits at 540-743-7387.
