At Big Spring Farm, a wedding-day dream took root beside a Lexington spring
Buddy and Jill Powers bring a background in wedding photography to a working farm and event venue.
Buddy and Jill Powers trace the idea for Big Spring Farm to their own backyard wedding. After years photographing other couples' celebrations and running a livestock farm, they wanted a place where those two parts of their lives could meet.
They found it outside Lexington. Big Spring Farm is a working cattle farm and event venue about six miles from town, with a spring-fed lake, historic buildings and mountain views. Its owners' experience includes 11 years as wedding photographers—a background that connects the practical movement of a wedding day with the spaces where its moments unfold.
The venue offers more than one setting for a ceremony. A peninsula beside the lake puts the water close to the gathering, while a hilltop location opens toward the surrounding landscape. The climate-controlled event barn provides an indoor center for the celebration, and Little Silver Cottage serves as a getting-ready space.
Those settings are supported by less visible details. Big Spring supplies an in-house inventory of tables, chairs and bars for events of up to 150 guests, and its team handles setup and teardown for ceremony, cocktail and reception spaces. On-site lodging adds another option for couples planning a celebration with people arriving from out of town.
Farm life remains part of the property rather than merely a backdrop. Big Spring describes its agricultural work as regenerative livestock farming, and farm manager Bailey brings a forestry background to the mix of land management and event preparation. The result is a venue organized around both a working landscape and the people gathering within it.
Lexington's proximity places the farm within reach of Washington and Lee University and Virginia Military Institute, while the rural setting gives events their own sense of place. For the Powers family, the original backyard celebration has grown into a business devoted to making room for other families' milestones.
