Blacksburg United Methodist Preschool keeps play at the center of a long tradition

Blacksburg United Methodist Preschool traces its beginnings to a kindergarten opened in 1949. The program changed in 1974 to focus on preschool-age children, but its place in the community has continued through generations of local families.

Today, the school serves children ages three to five from its Church Street location. Its approach centers on play and whole-child development, with classroom activities designed around the social, physical and learning needs of young children.

The program is Christian in identity and welcomes families of all faiths. That combination is part of how it describes its relationship with the wider Blacksburg community: a church-based preschool with enrollment extending beyond its own congregation.

Class size is another specific part of the model. The preschool describes two teachers in each classroom, with a maximum of 11 children in the three-year-old class and 14 in the four-year-old class. Those limits shape the daily setting in which children practice working together, exploring materials and becoming comfortable in a classroom.

Director Debbie McDowell joined the program in 2021. Her previous experience includes founding a church preschool in North Carolina, bringing a background in early-childhood program development to an already established school.

The school's history and present-day structure reinforce each other. A program with roots in the middle of the last century still focuses on the immediate experiences of a young child: playing alongside others, making choices, trying something unfamiliar and building relationships with teachers.
