Blackwater Nursery connects a Franklin County garden center to a family growing tradition

Blackwater Nursery & Landscaping dates its Franklin County business to 1978, but the family’s nursery history reaches further back. In 1900, Emmett Washington Jones established Jones Nursery in Carroll County, beginning the growing tradition that Blackwater traces in its own account of the company.

The business on Virgil Goode Highway now combines a nursery, a retail garden center and landscape construction. Trees and shrubs grown for the region sit alongside the materials needed to turn a planting plan into a finished outdoor space.

That combination gives customers several ways to work with the company. A homeowner can visit the garden center for plants and supplies. A landscape customer can arrange design, installation or restoration work. Contractors and other garden centers also buy nursery material.

Hardscapes and water features complement the planting work. The retail inventory includes garden plants, mulch, aggregates, pavers and retaining-wall materials.

Blackwater’s location south of Boones Mill connects the operation with Franklin County and the wider region, including Smith Mountain Lake. Its history brings plant growing and landscape building into one family business, with roots in two Virginia counties.
