For Blue Hill’s Mark Flanders, remodeling began at the drawing table

Mark Flanders began drawing blueprints for his father’s remodeling projects when he was 16. At 24, he took over his father’s business. The founder and chief executive of Blue Hill Building Co. came to residential construction through that early combination of plans and job-site experience.

His current company works on renovations and custom homes in Central Virginia, including Charlottesville, Albemarle County and the Shenandoah Valley. Kitchens, bathrooms, basements and additions form part of the remodeling work. Decks and custom retreat homes extend the business outdoors and onto new sites.

Blue Hill’s process begins with a visit to the space and a discussion of the owner’s needs, budget and schedule. Design can involve one of the company’s designers or plans the customer brings. Construction follows that planning stage, with a final walkthrough at the end.

The team brings several routes into that work. Project manager Steve Craun spent 11 years in commercial construction before turning his attention to residential projects. Before construction, he served in the Marine Corps. Chris Gilbert joined Blue Hill in 2022 after experience in sales and running a small business and now directs business development.

Office manager Heather Goodloe handles the administrative work behind the projects. Her background includes computer technologies, customer service and photography as well as management. With Flanders, the team connects the initial conversation, the drawings, the work on site and the records that keep a project moving.
