At Front Royal Dental Group, a patient considering cosmetic work can take home photographs of a proposed smile before deciding whether to go ahead. The most tangible part of the preview stays at the office. It is a removable model that fits over the patient’s own teeth.

The North Shenandoah Avenue practice, founded by Dr. Ezzat Abdoun, sets aside two appointments for what it calls its Smile Test Drive. At the first, the starting materials are the patient’s photographs, a three-dimensional scan and a conversation about what the patient would like to change. The design work takes place between appointments, when other dentists can review the records.

The second visit gives the patient two ways to consider the proposal. First comes a digital design mapped to the patient’s face. Then comes a chance to wear the mockup and feel its shape. The team removes it before the patient leaves. The patient keeps the photographs and video, along with information about the work the dentists propose and the order in which they would do it. The images document a possibility. The decision about treatment can come later.

For families coming in for an ordinary exam, the same screens serve a different purpose. The team uses X-rays and a scan to show patients what the dentist sees. The conversation moves from the images to priorities, with a written estimate that lets the patient review the options after the appointment.
