Huffman Insurance carries a family business tradition from Lexington to Staunton
When Bolivar and Hazel Huffman opened their insurance business in Lexington in 1968, they began a family enterprise that would eventually reach three Virginia communities. Today, their son Ward Huffman and his wife, Whitney, continue that work through offices in Lexington, Staunton and Covington.

Huffman Insurance Agencies has grown beyond its first location while retaining that family connection. Its Staunton office brought together two established local agencies, Tom Peters and L.A. Smith, when their longtime agents retired. Across from the YMCA on North Coalter Street, it serves Staunton, Waynesboro, Verona and the surrounding Augusta County area.
The breadth of its work reflects the variety of those responsibilities. Alongside automobile, home, renters and life insurance, Huffman offers business coverage and options for farms, crops, livestock and equipment. Commercial property, commercial auto and cyber liability also form part of its range.
Those categories describe very different working lives. A household reviewing its home and vehicle policies has different questions from a business operating several vehicles or a farm relying on specialized equipment. Huffman's range gives those conversations a local starting point, with coverage considered according to the customer's circumstances.
The agency works with multiple insurance companies. That allows its staff to explore options across carriers, though the availability and terms of any policy depend on the particular risk and insurer. The agency's role is to help customers understand those choices, rather than assume that one policy fits every household or enterprise.
A family business that began in a single Lexington office now has a wider regional presence, but the continuity is easy to trace. The Huffman name and the next generation’s involvement connect the present business to its beginnings. For customers in Staunton, that history sits alongside the everyday work of reviewing coverage and keeping policies aligned with changing needs.
