Four playgrounds and many stages of learning at a Harrisonburg academy

Four separate playgrounds give children at Learning Paths Academy Harrisonburg outdoor spaces suited to different ages. Inside, the Evelyn Byrd Avenue center takes a similarly staged approach, with programs extending from infancy through the elementary-school years.

Director Christina Burke brings experience in public schools and a private school serving students with special needs. She earned her early-childhood education degree at the University of Pittsburgh before working with children across several educational settings.

The academy’s programs include infant and toddler care, preschool, Montessori for ages three to five, junior kindergarten and before- and after-school care. Its preschool-readiness program incorporates inquiry, STEM activities and Spanish enrichment. Seasonal camps extend the options when schools are on break.

The center serves children from three weeks through age 12 and publishes hours of 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Transportation is offered for selected area elementary schools, with routes dependent on enrollment.

For families, that range creates the possibility of continuity as children grow. A tour can show how classrooms and play areas differ by age and help parents discuss the program, schedule and available place that best fit their child.
