Chris Miller’s route to ownership at Moss began on a gutter crew

Chris Miller joined Moss Home Improvement in 1986 as a gutter installer. More than two decades later, he bought the Danville-area business from its retiring founder, Marvin Moss.

The company had begun in 1970. Miller learned the work under Moss, then moved into estimates and outside sales in 2000. That progression gave him experience with both the installation itself and the conversations that set a project in motion. He acquired the business in January 2008.

Today, Moss Home Improvement & Roofing works on the exterior of homes across Southside Virginia and neighboring North Carolina communities. Roofs remain a major part of the business, alongside replacement windows, siding and gutters—the trade in which Miller first worked for the company.

The firm describes its service as extending from the initial estimate through the final cleanup. For a homeowner, those stages involve more than selecting a product: there is also planning the work, coordinating the installation and addressing the condition of the house along the way.

Miller’s history gives the company a continuity that spans an employee’s early trade experience, a move into project estimates and a later change of ownership. The name over the business remains the founder’s, while the person leading it began there on an installation crew.
