A family promise finds a home at New Field Farm
Before New Field Farm became a wedding venue, it was a promise. Brett Barraclough had told his wife, Donna, who grew up on a New Jersey turkey farm, that he would bring her back to farm life after his Army career.
Before New Field Farm became a wedding venue, it was a promise. Brett Barraclough had told his wife, Donna, who grew up on a New Jersey turkey farm, that he would bring her back to farm life after his Army career.
After 30 years of military service, the couple bought a property near Lexington. There was a farmhouse, an aging barn and plenty of work ahead. Their children and spouses joined the effort to restore the buildings, beginning the family project that became New Field Farm at Timber Ridge.
Today, that work welcomes a different kind of family gathering. The Shenandoah Valley venue hosts weddings in a restored barn and on an outdoor ceremony lawn, with room for celebrations of up to 250 guests. Smaller weddings are part of the offering, too, with micro-wedding packages accommodating groups as small as 20.
The transformation began with a working agricultural building. According to the family's account, cattle still occupied the barn's lower level when renovation started. The Barracloughs retained its frame while adapting the space for events, giving the building a new purpose without discarding the structure that shaped it.
That attention to the property carries into its overnight accommodations. Four barn suites take their names from birds associated with the farm: Cardinal, Barn Swallow, Wild Turkey and Dove. Each has its own character. The Barn Swallow Suite includes locally sourced furnishings; the Cardinal incorporates wood and beams brought from other parts of the barn. The Dove connects directly to a dressing room, creating a place for wedding preparations away from the main gathering.
Across the property, eight suites can accommodate as many as 17 overnight guests. Staying on site makes it possible for a wedding party or close relatives to share more of the occasion, rather than arriving only for the ceremony and leaving after the reception.
Practical planning is part of the venue's appeal. The barn can accommodate an indoor ceremony when weather rules out the lawn, and couples can add options to their wedding packages as plans develop. Prospective guests can arrange a complimentary tour to see how the spaces fit their celebration.
For Brett and Donna, the restoration has involved their children, Amber, Levi, Aaron and Autumn, along with their spouses. The result is a venue whose family story is built into its rooms and beams: a place that began with a promise between two people, now prepared to welcome other couples making promises of their own.
