Play, music and a familiar routine shape preschool at St. John
The Abingdon program combines classroom learning with outdoor time and community experiences.
A preschool day at St. John Lutheran in Abingdon moves between activities: play centers, art, music, movement and time outdoors. The variety is purposeful, giving young children different ways to take part in learning and get comfortable in a classroom routine.
Led by director Mel Schnelle, the program serves three- and four-year-olds and children preparing for kindergarten. Its school day runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with different attendance options for families.
The church setting is part of the experience. Weekly chapel and music join classroom activities, while field trips extend learning beyond the building. Photographs shared by the preschool include children meeting firefighters beside a fire engine—one example of connecting the classroom with the wider community.
Art and play sit alongside more structured activities, rather than being treated as rewards after the important work. For young children, participating in a group, trying materials and following a daily rhythm are all part of preparing for school.
Based on East Main Street, St. John offers Abingdon families a local preschool with a defined schedule and an identifiable director to contact. Parents can speak with Schnelle about current openings, attendance choices and whether the program fits their child’s next step.
