In Winchester, Vintage Building keeps the old-house trades alive
David Logan’s team combines restoration, cabinetmaking and a wood scientist’s attention to materials.
An old house can teach a builder a great deal: which joints endure, which materials weather well and which earlier repairs deserve a second look. At Winchester’s Vintage Building, those lessons guide both restoration and new construction.
Founder David Logan came to the trade by an unusual route. After earning a biology degree at William & Mary, he worked as a wood scientist and technical manager for a lumber company. In 1997, he started the business that became Vintage Building, later adding an in-house cabinetry shop, Vintage Workshop.
Today, carpenters and cabinetmakers work across structural repairs, detailed finish carpentry, millwork and renovation. The company typically concentrates on one or two major projects at a time, depending on their size. That deliberately limited workload suits buildings whose details demand investigation rather than an off-the-shelf answer.
The team’s experience reaches beyond the workshop. Vintage describes providing technical support to Preservation of Historic Winchester and participating in preservation-trades education. Collaborations with architects, designers and other craftspeople help turn difficult restoration questions into practical building decisions.
For an owner hoping to preserve a house’s character while making it useful for another generation, that combination is the heart of the business: respect for what already exists, backed by the skills to repair it.
