Virginia shifts to Election Day voting after early-voting period closes
Polls open November 3 from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.; ballots include federal races and locality-specific contests.
Virginia’s early in-person voting period ended October 31, leaving Tuesday, November 3, as Election Day for federal races, local contests and other ballot questions.
The Virginia Department of Elections lists U.S. Senate and House races, a special election for House of Delegates District 20, local general and special elections, proposed constitutional amendments and local referendums. The contests a voter sees depend on the voter’s district and locality.
Polling places open at 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. Anyone in line at 7 p.m. will be allowed to vote, the department says. Its voting information page links to the official polling-place lookup and identification requirements.
Although the ordinary registration deadline was October 23, the department says eligible voters may still register and vote in person using a provisional ballot through Election Day. Local registrars can explain the applicable process.
The official election calendar provides the ballot categories and deadlines. Early-voting locations should not be assumed to be a voter’s assigned Election Day polling place.
