New River Trail’s November van tours depart from two different trailheads

The November 12 south-end tour starts near Galax; the November 19 north-end outing begins at Foster Falls.

Two November van tours offer a seated journey along the former Norfolk and Western rail corridor at New River Trail State Park, with different departure points a week apart. Both run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and cost $15 per participant.

The November 12 south-end outing starts at the Cliffview access parking area, 451 Cliffview Road near Galax. Its planned route heads toward Gambetta, Byllesby Dam, Buck Dam, Ivanhoe, Austinville and Foster Falls before returning to Cliffview. That tour is limited to twelve participants.

The November 19 north-end outing meets at the depot at Foster Falls, 116 Orphanage Drive in Max Meadows. The park also describes its seating as limited.

Advance registration is required for both tours at 276-699-6778. The itinerary includes lunch and restroom stops, but food is not supplied; passengers need to pack their own meals and drinks. Pets are not permitted.

Trail conditions determine whether the vans can run. The park says registered visitors will be notified if unfavorable conditions force cancellation. The two departures give travelers a choice of starting point, but neither listing establishes that seats remain available.
