Shenandoah camping season narrows as two campgrounds close

Lewis Mountain and Big Meadows remain on later November schedules; early-2027 reservations are temporarily unavailable.

Shenandoah National Park’s camping options have narrowed for late-autumn travelers. Mathews Arm and Loft Mountain reached their scheduled seasonal closing date November 1, according to the park’s operating calendar, updated October 29.

Lewis Mountain is scheduled to remain open through November 22, with campsites available only on a first-come basis. Big Meadows is scheduled through November 29 and requires reservations. Those different arrangements matter for anyone planning a November overnight stay.

The National Park Service also says reservations for early 2027 are temporarily unavailable while campground operations transfer to incoming concessioner ExplorUS. The agency expects reservations to open in early January and plans to announce more details, including rates, in mid-December. Those are announced expectations rather than a confirmed booking date.

Other visitor services have separate closing dates. The park lists November 8 for Skyland and November 29 for Big Meadows Lodge, so a campground closing does not mean every overnight option closes simultaneously.

The official operating schedule is the reference for individual facilities. Travelers should also check current road and weather alerts before setting out.
