Gloucester shopping-center crossover closes Sunday for two weeks of roadwork

The Route 17 closure at The Shoppes of Gloucester is scheduled for November 8–22, weather permitting.

Trips to The Shoppes of Gloucester will take a different route beginning Sunday, November 8, when VDOT closes the Route 17 crossover and turn lanes for reconstruction. The agency expects the closure to last through November 22, weather permitting, and directs motorists to the posted detour.

The two-week closure combines several jobs: rebuilding the crossover, milling and paving the road, and adding pavement markings. Message boards are planned ahead of the change.

The work is part of a $5.1 million project at the shopping center and nearby Fox First Street. VDOT says construction at the Fox First Street crossover is recently complete, with final paving and markings still to come over the next two weeks.

Both locations use restricted crossing U-turn arrangements. The project realigns those crossings with the side streets; it does not restore left turns out of the side streets, which VDOT says will remain prohibited.

Branscome Operating is the contractor. The broader safety project is funded through Virginia’s SMART SCALE program and is expected to finish in June 2027, several months after this particular closure ends.
